Volleyball Scoring for Beginners

Indoor volleyball uses 25-point rally scoring: every rally produces a point, first to 25 with a 2-point margin wins the set. Best of 5 sets — the deciding 5th set is shorter, only to 15 points. Beach volleyball uses 21-point sets with the deciding 3rd set to 15.

How volleyball scoring works

Rally scoring (introduced in 1998 for indoor, 2001 for beach) means every rally produces a point. There is no concept of "side out without scoring" any more — that was the old volleyball format.

Indoor volleyball sets are first to 25 points, win by 2 (no cap). Best of 5 sets per match. The 5th set, if needed, is shorter — first to 15 points with the same 2-point margin requirement. Side switching happens at 8 in the deciding 5th set.

Beach volleyball uses 21-point sets with win by 2. Matches are best of 3 sets, and the deciding 3rd set is shorter (first to 15). Beach also has additional rules like fewer touches in some serves and stricter blocking conventions.

Edge cases and details

4v4 volleyball is a common social/recreational format, especially in mixed leagues. Rules are largely the same as 6v6 with adjusted defensive responsibilities.

Doubles indoor volleyball exists but is rare. Beach 2v2 is the dominant doubles format.

Scoring rules don't change between mixed and gender-specific competitions, but net heights and some rotation rules do.

Quick start for beginners

If you're new to volleyball, the scoring is one of the easier things to learn — much easier than the technique. Focus on three things: who serves next, what the current score is, and when the game ends. Everything else is detail.

The fastest way to internalise the scoring is to play three or four games while keeping score yourself. After that, the patterns are obvious. Volley scores volleyball with proper 25-point rally scoring (15 in the deciding set), best-of-3 or best-of-5 set formats, and automatic side switching. Beach 2v2 with 21-point sets (15 in the deciding set) is supported as a separate format.

Frequently asked questions

How does volleyball scoring work?

Indoor volleyball uses 25-point rally scoring: every rally produces a point, first to 25 with a 2-point margin wins the set. Best of 5 sets — the deciding 5th set is shorter, only to 15 points. Beach volleyball uses 21-point sets with the deciding 3rd set to 15.

How does Volley score Volleyball differently from other apps?

Most multi-sport apps treat every sport as a generic counter. Volley uses real sport-specific scoring engines — every rule that Volleyball actually has is applied automatically. You don't set up a custom counter; you pick Volleyball and play.

Is there a free app that scores Volleyball?

Yes — Volley is a free Volleyball scoring app on iOS and Android. It applies the right rules automatically (you just tap the side that won the point), tracks ELO across every match you play, and supports tournaments in three formats.

Can I track my Volleyball ELO rating?

Yes. Volley tracks your Volleyball ELO across every match you score in the app. Each sport has its own rating, so beating someone in Volleyball doesn't change your rating in any other sport you play.
