What is a Side out in Volleyball?

A side out is when the receiving team wins the rally and gains the serve. Under rally scoring, they also score a point. Side outs were a much bigger deal in old volleyball scoring (where only the serving team could score).

Example in a match

You're receiving serve. You win the rally. You side out — you get the next serve and (in rally scoring) a point.
