- Ranked matches affect your rating. Use these for competitive games where you want to track your skill level.
- Unranked matches don't affect ratings. Use these for casual games, practice, or when playing with beginners.
You choose ranked or unranked when setting up each match.
Yes! When starting a match, you can change the date and time to when the match actually took place. This is useful for logging matches you forgot to score live.
Doubles matches work just like singles, but with two players per side:
- When starting a match, add 2 players to each team
- Score points normally — the team wins or loses together
- Both partners' ratings are updated based on the result
You can mix registered users and guests on the same team. Each player maintains their own individual doubles rating.
Tournaments
Tournaments are created within groups:
- Go to your group
- Tap the Tournaments tab
- Tap the + button
- Choose a format (Round Robin or Bracket)
- Set the sport, dates, and other settings
- Invite participants or let group members join
You must be a group owner or admin to create tournaments.
- Round Robin — Everyone plays everyone. Best for leagues or when you want maximum games. Winner determined by most wins.
- Bracket — Single elimination tournament. Lose once and you're out. Best for quick competitions with a clear champion.
Choose Round Robin for ongoing play over time, or Bracket for a single event.
If you're invited to a tournament, you'll see it in your notifications. You can also:
- Go to the group hosting the tournament
- Tap the Tournaments tab
- Find the tournament and tap "Join"
Some tournaments may have registration deadlines or player limits.
- Go to the tournament page
- Tap "My Matches" to see your upcoming and completed matches
- You can also view the full bracket or standings from the tournament page
You'll receive notifications when it's time to play your next match.
Free groups can run one active tournament at a time. Charter members can run multiple concurrent tournaments in their groups — perfect for running different sports or skill-level brackets simultaneously.
Tournament matches are scored the same way as regular matches. When you start a tournament match:
- The match is automatically linked to the tournament
- Score points as usual
- Results update the tournament standings/bracket
Tournament organizers can choose whether matches affect player ratings or are unranked.
Ratings
Volley uses an Elo-based rating system, similar to chess. Everyone starts at 1500. When you play a ranked match:
- Beat someone rated higher than you → gain more points
- Beat someone rated lower than you → gain fewer points
- Lose to someone rated higher → lose fewer points
- Lose to someone rated lower → lose more points
The system rewards you for playing tough opponents and expects you to beat weaker ones.
The rating change depends on:
- Opponent's rating — Bigger changes when playing someone far from your level
- Expected outcome — Upsets cause bigger swings
- Score margin — Closer matches = smaller changes (for some sports)
If you beat someone 500 points below you, you'll gain very little. If you upset someone 500 points above you, you'll gain a lot.
Yes! Your Tennis rating is completely separate from your Squash rating, Pickleball rating, etc. You can be a 1800 in Tennis and a 1200 in Squash.
- Beginner (under 1200): Just starting out
- Intermediate (1200-1400): Developing player
- Advanced (1400-1600): Solid competitive player
- Expert (1600-1800): Highly skilled
- Elite (1800+): Top tier player
These are guidelines — your percentile ranking shows exactly where you stand.
Percentile rankings and detailed rating history are Charter member features. Upgrade to Charter to unlock full rating insights.
Doubles ratings are tracked separately from singles ratings. Each player has their own individual doubles rating per sport.
- Your team's rating is the average of both partners' doubles ratings
- Both partners gain or lose the same points based on the match result
- Playing with a stronger partner against weaker opponents means smaller gains
This ensures your doubles rating reflects your actual doubles performance, not your singles skill.
Stats & Streaks
Volley tracks a variety of stats for each player:
- Basic stats — Total matches, wins, losses, win rate
- Rating stats — Current rating, peak rating, rating history
- Streaks — Current play streak, win streak, longest streaks
- Head-to-head — Record against specific opponents
Charter members get access to advanced sport-specific stats and detailed analysis.
Play streaks track how many consecutive days you've played at least one match. It's a fun way to stay motivated and build a regular playing habit.
Your streak resets if you go a full day without playing. Keep the streak alive!
Win streaks count how many matches you've won in a row. Your current streak shows your active winning run, while your longest streak shows your all-time best.
Win streaks are tracked separately for each sport.
Charter members get access to sport-specific stats like:
- Games won/lost per set
- Tiebreak record
- Average match duration
- Performance by day of week
- Best and worst opponents
We're always adding more stats based on player feedback.
Leaderboards
Leaderboards rank players by rating within a group or globally. You can view:
- Group leaderboards — Rankings among your group members
- Friend leaderboards — Rankings among your friends
- Global leaderboards — Rankings among all Volley players
Leaderboards are separated by sport and updated after each ranked match.
Free users can see the top 3 players on each leaderboard plus their own position. Charter members can view complete leaderboard rankings and detailed stats for all players.
To appear on leaderboards:
- Create a Volley account (guests don't appear)
- Play ranked matches in a sport
- Have a public profile (private profiles are hidden)
You'll appear on group leaderboards for groups you're a member of.
Yes. If you make your profile private in Settings → Privacy, you won't appear on public leaderboards. You'll still see your own position, but others won't see you.
MVP & Comments
After a match ends, participants can vote for the MVP (Most Valuable Player). This is a fun way to recognize standout performances.
- Each player gets one vote
- You can vote for anyone in the match, including yourself
- MVP votes are tracked on player profiles
MVP results appear on the match detail screen after voting closes. The player with the most votes is highlighted as MVP. You can also see MVP counts on player profiles.
To comment on a match:
- Open the match detail screen
- Scroll to the comments section
- Type your comment and tap send
Comments are visible to all match participants and their friends. Charter members also have access to exclusive emoji reactions.
